What the internship actually involves
At Jacaranda FM, interns are embedded across the news department — not observing from the sidelines. At VowFM, the focus shifts to hands-on production:
compiling and reading daily bulletins, packaging stories for current affairs shows, and keeping the station’s social media updated with fresh news content. Interns will also complete short courses through the Wits Radio Academy, adding a formal training layer to the on-the-job experience.
Who this is for
Jacaranda FM is looking for candidates who:
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree or 3-year National Diploma in Journalism or a related field
• Have a valid driver’s licence, or are actively working toward one (fieldwork means mobility matters)
• Write and speak English confidently — bilingual English/Afrikaans candidates will have an edge• Can write and voice scripts specifically for radio, not just print
• Understand the discipline of fact-checking and accuracy under deadline pressure
• Are comfortable (or willing to learn quickly) operating studio and field recording equipment
Importantly, this internship demands full commitment — applicants should not be simultaneously enrolled in another field of study.
