Finance Intern Wanted at Netcare Shared Services, Johannesburg
Healthcare group Netcare has opened applications for a Finance Intern position within its Shared Services division in Johannesburg. It’s a fixed-term, full-time internship, and unlike many graduate internships that are deliberately broad and exploratory, this one comes with a clearly defined focus: debtors and collections within a hospital finance environment.
About Netcare Group
Netcare is one of South Africa’s largest private healthcare groups, operating in the medical, health, and social care sector with a workforce of over 10,000 employees. The company frames its work around a set of shared values — Care, Truth, Participation, Compassion, and Dignity — and this internship sits within Netcare Shared Services, the centralised function that supports the group’s hospital network on the finance and administrative side.
About the Role
The role summary is direct: the Finance Intern is responsible for helping achieve collection targets that are essential to hospital profitability, with overall responsibility for managing, controlling, and collecting outstanding monies owed to the hospital. In practice, this means the internship sits squarely within debtors control — a specialised corner of finance that’s less about budgeting or reporting and more about the operational, follow-up-heavy work of getting accounts settled. The day-to-day scope is extensive and touches almost every part of the debtors function, including:
- Account types — managing books across Medical Aid, private and foreign accounts, MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident) claims, deceased estate accounts, payment arrangement accounts, and handed-over accounts
- Billing accuracy — daily checking of MCRs (medical claim records) to ensure accurate billing
- Claims follow-up — resubmitting rejected switch applications and chasing pending Medical Aid claims that haven’t been submitted
- Journals — preparing and submitting journals for authorisation, and processing them once approved
- Risk management — flagging high-risk accounts for handover and identifying possible bad debt for approval
- Compliance — understanding PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefits) conditions, and working within the company’s Standard Operating Procedures
- Third-party liaison — managing rejections from medical schemes, the Road Accident Fund/WCA, and insurers
- Patient engagement — consulting directly with patients on outstanding balances and negotiating payment arrangements, including for long-outstanding accounts
This is a role with real operational weight attached to it — the intern isn’t just observing the finance function, they’re directly accountable for keeping debtor days in line with company targets and working through a daily collections work list.
Compliance and Audit Exposure
Beyond the collections work itself, the role includes explicit compliance responsibilities: adherence to Netcare’s Controlled Self-Assessment (CSA) audit standards, and managing compliance around repeat audit findings. For a finance graduate, this is valuable exposure — audit and compliance literacy is a skill that transfers well into almost any future finance career, and getting it early, inside a large corporate structure, is a genuine advantage.
Who Should Apply
Netcare has laid out clear educational requirements:
- Essential: A National Diploma in Finance (NQF Level 6) or higher, such as a degree or BTech in Finance (NQF Level 7)
- Computer literacy: Comfort with MS Office is expected
- Work experience: None required — this is explicitly structured as an entry-level internship
- Knowledge: A sound grasp of finance practices is essential; familiarity with SAP ISH (the hospital information system Netcare uses) is preferred but not required
Beyond the technical requirements, Netcare also outlines the soft-skill profile it’s looking for, including customer focus (covering both internal colleagues and external stakeholders like patients, doctors, and suppliers), strong personal work ethic, relationship-building ability, clear communication, and general technical competence.
Working Conditions
The role calls for “professional flexibility in working hours while supporting daily business hours,” and involves interacting with both internal and external stakeholders through multiple channels — expect a mix of phone, email, and system-based work given the nature of collections and patient liaison
